In 2014 all year 8 and 9 students will be asked to bring their own devices to school to enhance their learning. Information and notes will be handed out in Term 1 2014.
The BYOD trial is currently being evaluated at Merrylands High School. Teachers and students will be asked to complete surveys and participate in focus groups. Student work samples will also be collected. The data from these range of sources will be used to inform the future directions of BYOD at Merrylands High School.
In Year 8 PDHPE, students have been using their own devices to collaboratively create an annotated map to show the range of health services available in the local Merrylands area. This activity was completed using Google Maps and required students to collaborate and share with each other in real time.
The class used a range of personally owned devices for this activity, including Windows 8 laptops and Chromebooks.
This week selected year 7 & 8 classes have begun bringing their own devices to school to further enhance their learning. So far in Science students have used their devices to take photos and record video footage of experiments. Doing so allows students to have a more accurate record of their learning. The week's focus for allowing students to get used to taking photos, recording video and inserting them into a word processing or presentation app on tutor devices.
Some Year 8 students are already bringing in their own devices to school. For this Year 8 class students are bringing iPads, Windows 7 laptops, Windows 8 laptops and Chromebooks to help enhance their learning. Currently the Year 8s are completing a project where they are designing, conducting and reporting on a science experiment. They are using their devices to do online research, complete activities at their own pace, receive feedback from their teacher, take photos and record videos, editing videos, creating presentations, creating scientific simulations and writing reports.
